Government and municipality in cooperation for Sofia`s underground railway

The work on Sofia`s underground railway is a good example of cooperation between the government and Sofia Municipality, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev told the media Sunday. He and Sofia Mayor Boiko Borissov travelled by trolley along an extension of the underground in Bulgaria`s capital - from St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia to the Mladost 1 residential area. Accompanying them were Regional Governor Todor Modev, Japanese Ambassador Tsuneharu Takeda and European Investment Bank representative Jean-Marie Arnaud.

Stanishev and Borissov turned the first sod for the construction of a new underground station of the Mladost 1-3 - Tsarigradsko Shosse Blvd. extension of the railway.
"Infrastructure is a priority of the government, especially at the backdrop of the global economic crisis which is already felt in Bulgaria," Stanishev said.

The government will provide 20 million leva (10 million euro) for the Younak Stadium - Mladost 1 stretch of the underground. On February 18, a meeting of leading economists will be held to discuss the economic crisis, the prime minister said and invited Borissov to attend it.

It emerged that Sofia Airport will be connected to the underground railway in 2015 if financing is provided. According to the master plan of Sofia, by 2020 the underground should be the major means of transport in Sofia. The general plan for the development of the underground consists of three diametrical major running lines with extensions in the peripheral areas, a total length of 63 km and 65 stations.

The lines to be built by 2013 are included for financing in Operational programme Transport. The funds will come from the European Investment Bank, the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation and local co-financing. They will run east-west and north-south- the routes with the busiest traffic. They will have a total length of 12.8 km and 13 stations.

The extension of the underground is expected to shorten the time it takes to get from the suburbs to downtown Sofia from 50 or 60 minutes to 10-12 minutes. Traffic in the capital will be considerably eased as part of the bus lines will be closed down. In addition, the air, polluted by over 80,000 t of hazardous substances emitted by automobiles annually, will become cleaner. The expected economic effect would be over 45 million euro a year.
